The Portes du soleil is a truly massive area. Taking in 8 resorts, 12 villages and 650km of piste, it has enough variation and scope to keep riders for all abilities happy. For these reasons and many others that it has been voted best resort by Document magazine and Chosen by Burton to host the first stash run in Europe. At the heart of the Portes du soleil rests Avoriaz and it’s neighbour Morzine. Avoriaz has been at the forefront of snowboarding since it was the first resort to build a park in Europe, a reputation they have worked hard to maintain. These days Avoriaz alone has 3 parks, 2 pipes and 2 off piste jib runs and the rest of the Portes du soleil can add another 4 parks to that impressive tally. Although a variety of man made features are an attraction to any snowboarder, it’s the terrain in which they lie that makes the Portes du soleil such a gem. Although it may lack the vertical drop of it’s neighbouring Chamonix, the sheer vastness and variety of terrain holds enough off piste delights and easily accessible spots to keep not only holiday makers, but a big contingent of British pros coming back year on year. |
